 Cronulla, the Race Directors Review by Steve Newsome (12/02/11) After last years race I thought I was due for a day of nice weather. With the heat wave conditions the week before I knew it was going to be interesting but most of all I didn’t want the rain we had last year! I must have upset someone as this year we got rain and heaps of wind! This did not put off any of the magnificent 138 paddlers who showed up on the day. It was fantastic to see so many people show up to the first race of the series and especially to see many of the great friends from the 2010 race series. Special mention indeed to the many paddlers who came from long distances such as Windsor, Wollongong, Nowra and Newcastle! The race course had to be altered thanks to the 27 knot southerly hammering most of the course that hit at 6.30am. Of course the much talked about “Bay Surf” was blown out by this cross wind making it fairly calm in comparison to many days that we have seen. We had to take into account the effects of the cross wind on all paddlers and therefore it was a little bit shorter than previously planned. I think from what I was told the worst aspect of the race was the paddle up Gunnamatta Bay from the start. |

I would like to make special mention to all the first timers who raced and the SUP paddlers who battled under very trying conditions. It was a reward to stand on the finish line as you returned and see the smiles on your faces as you finished in the knowledge that you had just competed in a race under very tough conditions. As per last year we had a great post race bbq and I would like to thank the tireless efforts of Suzy, Elvis, Andrew, Macca and Linda in getting everyone fed and comfortable again. These races would never be successful without our sponsors and we should all acknowledge the continued support that they given this series once again. So I would like to thank the Management and staff of Epic Kayaks, Bing Lee, LG, Garmin, Pro Kayaks and Unleash Compression. See you next year! Lets hope it is sunny! |
